A Day at The Downs Spells Lots of Fun for The J Library Families

A trip to Churchill Downs was a popular event for The PJ Library participants and their parents on Sunday, March 15. Approximately 60 children and 40 parents were on hand for the fun. The outing included a visit to the barn area, the opportunity to see the movie about the track shown in the round and time to explore the Kentucky Derby Museum.

JHHS Makes Grants to Help Jewish Elderly

When Jewish Hospital HealthCare Services sold Four Courts Senior Center, the organization established a permanent endowment, the JHHS Senior Services Endowment Fund, to enhance the connection between the Jewish elderly and the Louisville Jewish community by providing programs and services for those who are homebound or who require residential care. The endowment ensures that this important connection will be maintained in perpetuity. Betty Fleischaker serves as the committee chair and Dr. Jerry Temes chairs the JHHS Board of Directors. more

Super Sunday: $230,000 Raised for 2009 Federation Annual Campaign

The Louisville Jewish Community has reason to be proud. On Super Sunday, February 22, and during the following week, more than 115 volunteers made calls to members of the Louisville Jewish community. More than 700 individuals responded, pledging approximately $230,000 to the 2009 Federation Annual Campaign. That represents a 8.5 percent increase over the amount pledged by the same people last year. More than 170 people who did not participate in last year’s Campaign made commitments to the 2009 Campaign.

"Facing History" Is a Success for JCPS

The teachers at Western High School will tell you many of their students face real life challenges. A large portion of the student body qualifies for free or reduced cost lunches, which means they come from economically challenged families. Many students also deal with a variety of other problems prevalent in poverty-stricken homes: parents unavailable for them, having to fend for themselves, hunger, abuse, teen pregnancy, drugs, poor reading skills and much more.

After a one-semester hiatus, the Florence Melton Adult Mini-School is again operating in Louisville.
When the Louisville Jewish community launched its Melton site in 1999, it tapped into a population hungry to learn. Here was an opportunity to engage in serious Jewish learning, as adults, centered on finding meaning rather than learning facts.

Tzofim Deliver Great Performance, Share Enthusiasm for Israel

On Monday, July 7, the Louisville Jewish community enjoyed a visit from the Tzofim Friendship Caravan, a group of Israeli Scouts who came to town for two musical and dance performances. The Scouts, a group of five male and five female 17-year-old Israelis, returned to Louisville for performances that delighted their audiences. more

Thousands of them travel the world to inspect factories, kitchens, tanker trucks, slaughterhouses, bakeries, butchers and supermarkets, overseeing meal preparation for hotels, Jewish schools, synagogues and summer camps.

Foundation Makes Grant to JCPS for Civic Curriculum

"The Jewish Community Federation's Foundation for Planned Giving is pleased to announce that it is partnering with the Jefferson County Public Schools by making a $10,000 grant to the school district to help it implement 'The Exploring Civics: Facing History and Ourselves' curriculum in 21 JCPS high schools this fall," Foundation Chair Robert H. Sachs announced on Tuesday, May 6. "This grant will be used to help fund a Summer Institute to teach the teachers how to use these materials. more

Hundreds Enjoy Louisville's Yom HaAtzmaut Celebration

The excitement started early on Sunday, May 18, as nearly 200 cyclists and nearly 100 walkers gathered in the field near the Drivers License Bureau on Dutchmans Lane to kick-off a full day of celebration for Yom HaAtzmaut, Israel's Independence Day, organized by the Jewish Community Federation. Congressman John Yarmuth and ride/walk co-chairs Matthew Karr and Stanley Miles gave everyone a pep talk and at 11 a.m., the bikers, many carrying small Israeli flags, set off on their 19.48-mile trek (Israel was established in 1948) that took them across the Second Street bridge, through Seneca Park and back to the Jewish Community Center. They were part of a world-wide event: Ride with Israel@60. more
